編集さんとのメールのやり取りの中で、特集記事のテーマに「森下」が出てきたとき、ちょっと焦った。
……ん？森下？ 森下ってどこだ？？
地図を確認すると、森下は、位置的にはだいたい両国と清澄白河の中間あたりにあった。両国といえば相撲の街として有名で、一方清澄白河はコーヒーの街として有名。大きな公園や美術館などがあり散策も楽しいエリア。いずれの街も日本人はもちろん海外観光客からも人気で、観光に詳しいメディア関係者曰く、その2つの街に挟まれた森下周辺のホテルに宿泊する旅行者も多いらしい。
また森下は深川発祥の地でもあり、江戸時代には松尾芭蕉や葛飾北斎などが訪れ文化的に栄えた場所でもある。令和の人の流れと江戸からの歴史が交差し、最近では個性のある個人店が増えている面白いエリアだそうだ。
そんな森下のカフェを調べていくと、やっぱり面白い店が多かった。古民家をフランス映画に出てくるような空間にリノベーションしたカフェ、訪れる人の８割がホットケーキを注文する喫茶店、ちょっと隠れた半地下に客席があるノスタルジックな趣のカフェ。個性的で他にはないようなお店が点在していた。

【We featured cafes in Morishita, a town where culture and history intersect】
During an email exchange with my editor, I was a little confused when “Morishita” came up as the theme for a feature article.
…Huh? Morishita? Where is Morishita??
Checking a map, I saw that Morishita was roughly halfway between Ryogoku and Kiyosumi Shirakawa. Ryogoku is famous as a sumo town, while Kiyosumi Shirakawa is known as a coffee town in Japan. The area is enjoyable for strolling, with large parks and art museums. Both towns are popular with both Japanese and international tourists, and according to a media expert familiar with tourism, many travelers stay in hotels around Morishita, sandwiched between the two towns.
Morishita is also the birthplace of Fukagawa, and during the Edo period, it flourished as a cultural center visited by artists such as Matsuo Basho and Katsushika Hokusai. It’s an interesting area where the flow of people in the Reiwa era intersects with history dating back to the Edo period, and recently, a number of unique, independent shops have been popping up.
When I looked into Morishita area’s cafes, I found that there were, as expected, many interesting shops. There’s a cafe that renovated an old house into a space that looks like something out of a French film, a coffee shop where 80% of customers order japanese pancakes, and a nostalgic cafe with seating in a semi-basement. There are a variety of unique and one-of-a-kind shops scattered around.
