カフェを訪れる理由は、人によって千差万別だと思う。「おいしいコーヒーを飲みたい」と出かける人もいれば、「1人の時間がほしいから」と訪れる人もいる。また「あのオーナーに会いたい」という理由で足を運ぶ人も。
私の場合は、家でも仕事場でもない非日常の空間に行きたい、と思って出かけることが多い。なかでも私を非日常の場にいる感覚にしてくれるのは、空間にこだわりを持つお店だ。客席に座りながら壁や天井を見渡し、その建物や内装を手がけた人や、それを現在も大切に守り続けながら店を営む人の想いを想像すると、そんな空間に自分がいていいんだろうかとちょっと申し訳ないような、畏怖の念ような感覚を覚えたり、そんな場所に気軽に来れるような時代に生まれてほんとに良かったなぁ、という気持ちが湧いてきたりする。
そういう素晴らしいカフェが東京に数多く存在するのも、私たちがついていることの一つだと思う。行こうと思えばすぐ行ける距離に素敵な店がたくさんある。今回はそんなお店を集めた特集記事を執筆しました。タイムアウト東京で以前人気だった記事に、今年オープンしたお店や「ぜひこのお店も」と思うお店を加える形でリニューアルした記事です。ご興味のある方はぜひ読んでみてくださいね。

【I wrote the article “Tokyo’s 22 Best Design Cafes” (Time Out Tokyo)】
The reasons for visiting cafes vary greatly from person to person.Some people go because they want to drink delicious coffee, others because they want some time alone, and still others because they want to meet the owner.
For me, I often go because I want to go to an extraordinary space that’s neither home nor work. Of these, it’s cafes that are particular about their space that make me feel like I’m in an extraordinary place. Sitting in a cafe, I gaze out at the walls and ceiling, imagining the thoughts of the people who designed the building and interior, and the people who continue to cherish and preserve it today. I feel a sense of awe and wonder if I deserve to be in such a space, and I also feel grateful to be born in an age where I can easily visit such places.
I think one of the reasons we’re so lucky is that Tokyo has so many wonderful cafes like this. There are plenty of great cafes within easy reach. This time, I’ve written a special feature on just such places.
